Champions in the Classroom
Ole Miss student-athletes not only have the opportunity to play in one of the best conferences in the nation, they also attend a university that is world-renowned for its academics.
Under Derek Cowherd, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development, the FedEx Student-Athlete Academic Support Center has made great strides in improving the environment for Ole Miss student-athletes. Men’s tennis has a full-time academic counselor as well as several learning specialists and tutors available to help them achieve success in the classroom.
While Ole Miss has ranked among the nation’s elite for the past 21 years, they have been just as impressive off the court. The Rebels have earned the prestigious ITA All-Academic Team Award 10 times, most recently in 2015. The Award is given to teams with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or above on a 4.0 scale.
In addition, the Rebels have received the Chancellor’s Cup 10 times. The cup is awarded each year to the men’s and women’s varsity sports with the highest cumulative grade point average.
Individually, the Rebels have had many Capital One Academic All-Americans and numerous ITA Scholar-Athletes. Bram ten Berge became the first Ole Miss tennis player to win the SEC’s Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year award (2009).
The Rebels boast 109 Academic All-SEC honorees and 29 national academic honorees.
“We are extremely proud of the team for achieving a high level of success on and off the court. They are committed to being one of the best teams in the country and great students. We are thankful to have outstanding leadership from the chancellor, to our athletics director, to all the academic support staff, who provide the student-athletes everything they need to be successful.”
